In her book, Dinner with Mugabe, Heidi Holland describes Mugabe as behaving in ways “typical of a spoilt child when told he cannot do as he pleases,” and again, Than Shwe is quite similar. Their common attitude is to wave their fist at the world and vow “I’ll do what I want and you see if you can stop me. I want it my way and if you won’t give it to me, I’ll show you! You’ll see what I can do!”25 The casualties of both men’s narcissism include not only human lives destroyed and misery wrought upon an entire nation, but the destruction of the understanding of right and wrong, truth and lies. Right and wrong are so confused, Holland writes, that the listener “cannot identify the moral line any longer”26 . And yet to the observer, while Solzhenitsyn was right that the line between good and evil passes through every human heart, men like Than Shwe and Mugabe appear to have a remarkable ability to simply block out, justify, or remain indifferent to the moral implications of their actions.
Some international observers find it difficult to reconcile the teachings of a religion focused on peace and spiritual enlightenment with the brutal practices carried out by Than Shwe’s military regime, given how strongly Than Shwe and other Generals identify with Buddhism. The explanation is quite simple – Than Shwe justifies attacks on monks in his own mind by either labelling them “bogus” 46 monks, or by disrobing them 47 At the same time, military officials use the blanket of Buddhism to defend, and deny, their own human rights abuses. One seasoned advisor to the U.S. Embassy in Burma in the 1970s and 1980s said, “I once had a meeting with a general in Burma and
pressed him about the killings of political dissidents. Instead of responding to my question, he simply denied everything, saying ‘We’re Buddhist, we don’t kill.’”
